The gap is not really material cost. An acrylic unit at $400 to $1,500 and the tile, membrane, mortar, and backer for the same footprint at $1,500 to $4,000 differ by a couple of thousand dollars at most. Size moves a tiled shower much more than it moves a prefab one, and the reason is that prefab is priced as a manufactured object while tile is priced by the square foot of surface built. Read down that column and the pricing stops being mysterious. A valve, a pan, and a door alone total $1,100 to $7,400 before a single tile is set — which is most of the range for the whole job. On the prefab path the DIY saving is real but modest — roughly $500 to $1,000 on a job whose labor line is only $600 to $1,500 to begin with, and a good part of that saving is spent again on the plumbing connection, which is the part most likely to bring a plumber in anyway at a $75 to $200 minimum call-out.
On the tiled path the gap looks enormous — a few thousand dollars — and it is the gap where DIY showers fail. The failure is never the tile, which is visible and correctable. It is the waterproofing: an inside corner of the membrane, a weep hole packed with mortar, a pan slope built flat.
